Default New and hopelessly lost

I am very new and know virtually nothing. I am ok with HTLM programming but PhP and MySQL are a foreign land.
In order to learn I was advised to download and install XAMPP.
Then to use online tutorials.
I have downloaded and installed XAMPP on my Windows XP.
I can start them fine.
But I have no idea how to save a document, find a saved document or anything else.
I saw a short tutorial included with the download. It said to create a very simply 'hello world' script.
Easy. I did it in notepad but where do I save it? As what? How do I find it again?
Basically please can someone help this idiot get started.
Thanks,
