This follows on from the news item posted here 'Open Source PHP IDE - Developers Wanted' (which I will link to soon).

PHP-Editors.com are looking at bringing together a group of Open Source programmers and PHP Programmers to help build a new Open Source PHP IDE. Nothing has been decided as yet, we hope that we will find people interested in helping.

If you would like to help either build the IDE, provide ideas or be willing to test, please let us know. This thread is simply a petition to see what you guys think...

Any thoughts?

I would be willing to help. I know python and some perl. I would also be willing to help brainstorm or with testing.

Great guys

Here is what I think we might need to get started:

* Project Manager (I can take part control)
* More Programmers, I think C/C++ is the way to go
* Ideas for features/requirements

And finally we need to come up with a catchy name.

Look forward to your replies

Hi,

I'm currently studying Communications- and Software-Engineering and thus got quite some knowledge on:

- Software-Engineering process and practices
- C/C++ in combination with Qt
- very, very basic Java knowledge
- quite some PHP experience

What I'd expect from an open-source IDE is the following:

- workspace/project management features
- cvs/subversion/... support
- intelli-sense and auto-complete
- syntax-colouring
- built-in debugger, probably not DBG as DBG's non-commercial version is released way too late after the most-recet php version (yes I'd be interested in writing a debugging module if necessary)

Regards,
daehlith

Hi Guys,

I'm currently working on various projects that vary from c/c++ on embedded linux / windows to c# development on windows and php.

I think that the idea of an opensource editor sounds great.

I have been testing IDE's @ work to find out which path to follow.
I was disapointed that there wat not even one IDE that did the "thing" i would expect an IDE. the main conclusion i made that or the IDE is to expensive or it was kind of sluggish or at last it worked more against me then with me. (complexity of the IDE).

therefore following my idea's.

- make it working both on linux as in windows.
- Allow different degrees of complexity for
* starters
* Ui designers
* And of coarse the actual programmers
- make sure the debugger is userfiendly (usage and configuration), optional remote debugging.
- MySql integration
- snippets
- Code generation utilities (uml based).
- and of coarse the previously noted expectation of the fellow posters.

First of all i think it might be good to define the scope/expectations of the IDE and maybe devide it into phases. and then maybe try to make a desision on the language to program it in.

anyway i think its a very nice suggestion and i'm willing to spend lots of time on it to make this 'the solution' php programmers have been dreaming of B)

Hello all

Nice idea. Maybe it would be a good idea to contact some of the developers that posted here about there personal applications (php-editors).
For example PHP Designer 2005 looks very nice, and it would be a good starting point.
Some features are not working as I would expect, some features would be more than necessary.
I started learning html, than php using Macromedia Dream Weaver … for me that is the quality standard.
A free tool that has the basic functionality (not the entire functionality ...) of Macromedia Dream Weaver … would be storming.

I am a quality assurance engineer; I am from Romania, I would be happy to help with the testing part. And when I say testing I don’t mean given clicks all over the application (that is free testing – it is necessary too in some point in some development stages) … but creating testing scripts for different modules / functionalities (orientated testing), so at the end the future application will be well documented and the errors will be well tracked down.

I finished chemistry 3 years ago, I am in the first year at informatics … I know some php / mysql, I will have to learn C++ / Java and probably others languages. But for now I don't consider myself a programmer.

Most important thing in this moment I think is to start the project. That means that some one should take the initiative, create the starting point, contact some peoples, create a base group, assignee and define responsibilities and start listing the ideas and features of the future application …
Than create the infrastructure – a web page, a forum, a tracker database, … you know … the interaction - communication with the other peoples that are interested in this project!

I will stop now here … I am waiting some answers / ideas / suggestions / anything …

Best regards!

Hi guys,

I'm not very good at programming in c or c++, so I won't be helping with coding (unless I start learning c++ decently, then I will offer my coding help).

But this is what I would like as an editor.

The key-word is plugins. For java, I use eclipse, and I really like the plugin based design. I recently downloaded jEdit, and handling the plugins just feels good.

The idea would be that you start with a basic php or text editor. Like an enhanced notepad, maybe add colorcoding and auto-indenting. That should be easy enough.
Then for every function you want to see implmented, you make a plugin. Want code-completion? Write a plug-in for it. Want a project manager? Write a plug-in for it.

The core for the editor could be made by 1 or 2 programmers, and after that everyone can just start writing plug-ins for what they think should be in the editor.

I think this would make the developing of the editor a lot easier. You don't have to work with someone elses code, just write a plug-in in c/c++ or some other language, submit it and anyone can download it.
For users this is atractive, because you can make the editor exactly as you want it. From a very lightweight editor with only basic functions, to a very powerfull IDE with advanced functions.
If you get a big enough userbase, which shoulnd't be a problem, there will be plug-ins for the editor in no time.

Well, that's just my 2 cents. I hope it is usefull, and I hope I can enjoy the editor asap .
