Question what can i use to make a web portal?

Hi guys. I'm relatively new to PHP and i'm working on a project for school (i'm taking up IT). we're supposed to learn a languange (our group was assigned to PHP) and make a web portal with processing capabilities for a small company. something like a more powerful and customized Yahoo! groups. anyway, i'm getting confused with all these PHP editors and IDEs, and i don't know which one to get.

I used dreamweaver in the past (in my friend's computer) to make some an online application for our database subject for school (we used JSP), and it was pretty cool. it felt so complete, like everything needed was there to manage the project. so to my understanding, if i want something like that, i'd want an IDE, not just an editor right?

what do you guys recommend (i'm using windows XP)? it'd be great if it were free or inexpensive (i'm still a student). i heard great things about Komodo IDE, PHPEd, and Dreamweaver 8, but they're so expensive!

i don't know if it's of any relevance, but i'd like to implement some AJAX functionalities as well. for example, i checked out google calendar and more, and it'd be great if i could put the same user experience in the calendaring module of my portal

hope you guys can help me out!
