Position summary
We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative person to play a significant role in the continuing technical development and management of
Funnel the Money: Allocating Resources to Reduce Poverty (
Funnel The Money).
Funnel the Money seeks to help governments and other policy-makers design and implement policies that allocate government resources in ways that reduce poverty and improve the delivery of services vital to driving economic development and increasing peoples' well-being and quality of life. In addition, Funnel the Money aims to provide citizens with a transparency tool to help assess and provide input to their governments' performance in distributing fiscal resources. The successful applicant will help initiate, design, and implement improvements to the mapping and statistical tools, and customize the tool for ad-hoc modifications for the countries Funnel the Money is currently working in: Uganda, Nigeria, Indonesia, and all of Central Asia and the Caucasus.
Major responsibilities
Work independently and within a small team to plan and implement web site improvements. More specifically:
- Help refine and improve our on-line mapping tool using PHP, MySQL and object-oriented design strategies.
- Integrate Drupal into the existing framework, and develop tools to support an online community.
- Develop more elegant and intuitive user interfaces.
- Add a regional mapping component to the tool; currently only mapping at national and sub-national levels.
The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to create maps with a Geographic Information System (GIS).
Qualifications
The candidate should be an astute, highly organized individual with substantial experience in database-driven web development. Applicants should have an interest in international environmental issues, online social networks, and an understanding of the role that scientific information plays in formulating environmental policy. Specifically, we are looking for:
- Advanced knowledge of PHP, MySQL, HTML
- Prefer knowledge of JavaScript, AJAX, CSS, OOP.
- Experience with Drupal or another CMS a plus.
- GIS experience a plus, but not required.
- An affinity for data and experience in using statistics and math to interpret data.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with both technical and non-technical members.

$15-$20 per hour, commensurate with experience
