Hi!
I’m a student of digital culture and I’m doing a research for my school project about people who use php. Because I can’t travel around the world (as great as that would be), I’ll have to do this research in other way… So, if you could be so kind, please answer to my questions (below) ASAP! Thank you.

1. Why you have chosen this language (php) and how long you have been coding with it?
2. What kind of projects you have done with php? (For example, have you built a discussion board etc. with it?)
3. Do you use free php scripts (i.e. those which you can download from sites like www.hotscripts.com) and do you also develop them? How often do have chosen to use them?
4. How often you visit on discussion boards like this?
5. What are the reasons why you come to visit on these kind of discussion boards (for example: just for fun or to get some information about… what?)?
6. Do you consider yourself as part of this community? What do you think about your role in it?
7. If you have got contacts through this or any other php discussion board, do you ever meet them in RL?
8. Do you take part of meetings with other php users (and coders)?
9. Have you ever got a job (coding in php) through a discussion board like this?
10. Optional: How old you are?
11. Optional: What is your gender?
12. Optional: Where do you live? (i.e. Europe, Asia, US…)

If you don't want everybody to see your answers, please PM them to me!

1. PHP seemed to do the kind of things that I was looking for in a language. About a year and a half.
2. I have written websites, connected flash to dynamic external data, and personal tools all in php.
3. Nope, I have never used other peoples scripts because I still need to learn alot more. When I feel that I have a better grasp on the language I will probably use other peoples scripts.
4. Every day, many times.
5. For fun, to see what other people have to offer and see if there are any questions in the help forum that I can provide answers for.
6. Sort of, I have about fifteen to twenty more posts before I feel like people know me here.
7. Nope, not yet.

1. Why you have chosen this language (php) and how long you have been coding with it?
It was very JAVA like, but also really easy to move to from Jython and Perl. I have been coding with it for over 8 years. So long in fact back then it was called PHTML.

2. What kind of projects you have done with php? (For example, have you built a discussion board etc. with it?)
PHPX (http://www.phpx.org) is my portal/CMS system. I have also done large corporate portals (over 500 tables in the database and about 2M lines of code)

3. Do you use free php scripts (i.e. those which you can download from sites like www.hotscripts.com) and do you also develop them? How often do have chosen to use them?
Yes and Yes. I always look out there before I go code something, sometimes it is easier to code your own, other times just use someone else’s or hack it to your own needs.

4. How often you visit on discussion boards like this?
Far too often.

5. What are the reasons why you come to visit on these kind of discussion boards (for example: just for fun or to get some information about… what?)? I like to help out people, but help them to understand the theory and why that is. I don’t give out code much, I like to give hints and help them reach their own conclusions. That way they understand how to apply it in the future and build on it.

6. Do you consider yourself as part of this community? What do you think about your role in it?
LOL yes. I am one of the moderators, have been for a couple of years now. So if you post annoying advertisements and wonder where they go, feel free to ask.

7. If you have got contacts through this or any other php discussion board, do you ever meet them in RL?
No. I like anonymity, to an extent.

8. Do you take part of meetings with other php users (and coders)?
I have been to just about every PHP-CON in the last few years, both North America and Europe, both speaking and just attending.

9. Have you ever got a job (coding in php) through a discussion board like this?
Nope. Although, as a manager of coders in a large aviation company, I am not adverse to at least interviewing from a board like this. Assuming they are local and have the right skills.

10. Optional: How old you are?
28

11. Optional: What is your gender?
Male

12. Optional: Where do you live? (i.e. Europe, Asia, US…)
Texas

1. I played with it for personal use and it really was my first scripting/coding language outside of HTML. About 4 years with only the last 2 becoming work related.

2. Games, CMS and small scripts.

3. I have never contributed, but use whatever scripts I can find to shorten my work

4. Many times a day.

5. Gain information and help out where I can.

6. I am a small part of the community, but could/should contribute more.

7. Nope

9. Got plenty of requests for volunteers and hit up by people not wanting to do the work themselves.
